The Rakess

Society of Sirens #1

by Scarlett Peckham

⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5

The Society of Sirens has been created and we are introduced to them in the memoir of Seraphina Arden, London’s most infamous fallen woman. She, along with her friends, a former courtesan, a scandalous artist and the society matriarch who took this crew under her wing, they set out to use their skills to improve the lot of womankind. Sera escapes London to write her memoirs that are to be published to fund their activities. In Cornwall Sera meets with her demons head on and also sees the possibility of a happier life when she meets an architect, Adam Anderson, working at the neighbouring estate.

This book left me emotionally shaken. The drama the characters fight though was palpable. At some points the realness of the writing was too relatable. But at those points a shored up my own strength to follow the characters next step. When the characters were not fighting for their beliefs and finally came together… it was H-O-T!!! The sexy times were on another level for a historical romance…

Spoiler/ Trigger Warning:
This book discussed miscarriages, and the death of a premature baby. Alcoholism and partner abuse was also featured.

The Society of Sirens are out there fighting the good fight. It may not be easy or a clean fight, but these ladies are an unstoppable force. This was not your ordinary historical romance, its practically the new feminist manifesto rewritten. This is a must read.

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham is scheduled to release April 26th, 2020.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers, Avon Books through Edelweiss+. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Gunslinger’s Guide to Avoiding Matrimony

The Gunslinger’s Guide to Avoiding Matrimony By Michelle MacLean ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 The follow up to Michelle MacLean’s Hitched to the Gunslinger, The Gunslinger’s Guide to Avoiding Matrimony is finally here and the citizens of Desolation are up to more shenanigans! Running from the law retired gunslinger/gambler Adam Woodson stumbled upon the town of Desolation. His timing is perfect and he walks right into the mess groom selection/ wedding ceremony for the town and ends up married to spinster Nora. Nora hadn’t planned on picking a groom, but Adam will suit her purpose nicely- she only needs a husband long enough to inherit her property… too bad Adam has no intention of being that husband! Now the rules of Desolation state a man must marry or find a job… so Adam starts trying his hand at all the jobs, while Nora attempts to woo him to sign the marriage papers. In general this is a cute and funny premise, but Adam’s insistence that he can’t/won’t marry is too much. I felt for Nora and her inse...

It’s Max’s turn to marry! But Max isn’t going to just heed his father’s demands- he’s his own man and it’s a modern (Gilded) age! Solution: he will find a fake fiancée to cease his threats. His sisters friend, whom he had a shared experience with, the widowed Lady Helena March would be perfect! Just what his father wants and bonus-she’s not interested in marriage either! Ah, the old fake engagement! I suggest choosing someone you don’t actually like if you don’t want to end up married for real in the end! I jest! Max and Helena make a perfect pairing… so perfect the only thing that seems to be keeping them from actually being engaged in truth is the long distanced nature of ...
