The Duke Goes Down

The Duke Goes Down

The Duke Hunt, Book #1

by Sophie Jordan

⭐⭐⭐/5

Sophie Jordan introduces us to her latest series, The Duke Hunt with the first book, The Duke Goes Down.

This is an interesting tale of tables turning where the childhood bully and social better has their circumstance ripped away from them and they return to have the “victim” proceed to bully them… then they fall in love! OK- stay with me on this!

Imogen Bates and Peregrine Butler (former Duke of Penning) have known each other since childhood. Always seeing himself as far above the young vicar’s daughter, Perry was never kind to her…

Fast forward 10 years and things have changes drastically, Perry is stripped of his dukedom and returns to the small town where Imogen still resides and tends to her vicar father. He no longer has his titles or inheritance and he needs to find an heiress to marry in order to return to some semblance of his former life.

Imogen is still nursing hurt feelings and takes it upon herself to enact revenge against the former duke and sabotage his marital prospects. She’s not too stealthy and Perry discovers her treachery and eventually persuades her into rectifying the situation… all the while the time they are spending together starts to bring them closer and allows both of them to see the true person for once. An attraction blooms!

This was a harder book for me to get behind. I love a good enemies to lovers but some of the actions in this story really veered into bullying in my opinion. After mulling over this book I have a better opinion of it. While reading I really didn’t like the heroine and I think I judged her more harshly because she was the daughter of the vicar. I wish Imogen had felt more remorse for her actions…. On the flip side, the redemption for Perry was well done and I enjoyed seeing him transform from the Duke to regular Mr. Butler and come into his own.

This trope and the heroines actions, made this one hard for me to enjoy. I am eager to continue the Duke Hunt with the next book in the series!

The Duke Goes Down by Sophie Jordan  is scheduled to release June 27th, 2021.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers, Avon Books through Edelweiss+. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Remember Love

Remember Love Ravenswood series, Book 1 by Mary Balogh ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 Historical romance queen, Mary Balogh introduces us to another brilliant extended family and reminds up to remember love in one swoop with this series opener! First off, this epic second chance romance gave me pure romantic chills that were remittent to reading Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Her beautiful storytelling and detailed descriptions and character building really immersed me into this story and made me root for second chances and love! Childhood neighbours, Devlin Ware and Gwyneth Rhys never know the other felt the same attraction and pull towards the other until the stars aligned at the neighbourhood fete and they finally discover their mutual affection… but they were not mean to be young lovers, since family scandal befalls Devin and he is banished from his family home.  White no where to go and a determination to shed his innocence and become a man, he enlist in a foot regiment… and stays away at war ...

White Knight Needed

White Knight Needed Reluctant Heroes, Book 2 by Betina Krahn ⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 Barclay Howard is bigger and burlier than your average gentleman… and thus he has found himself to be somewhat of an antidote to the fairer sex. As a result he is more often found behind the pages of his Ivanhoe novel than out and about attempting to court a fair lady. But when his path crosses with down on her luck Norah Capshaw, his white knight complex rises up to make him go above and beyond again and again to be her hero… even though she is incredibly reluctant to the idea! This was a fun adventure romance filled with roadside hijinks, and a family mystery. Barclay was a perfect hero in this book. He was always there offering support and rescue to Norah. On the other side Norah’s resistance of Barclay and his efforts was the only wet blanket on this otherwise delightfully sweet romance!   Overall, this is my second Betina Kran book and I find her writing very light hearted and action packed. A Duke for Miss Townsbridge

A Duke for Miss Townsbridge The Townsbridges, Book 4 by Sophie Barnes ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 Sophie Barnes is a master at the novella! Every time I read one of her novellas, it is just perfect! Characters that are developed and graphics you, quick flowing plots to move the story and an ending to delight! As a duke, Matthew believes he should be able to marry anyone he decides on… and he decides that the perfect bride to fit into his unconventional life is his neighbour, Sarah. Since Sarah has never even met Mathew before his proposal, she decides that a courtship is needed before she make up her mind! I was was immediately invested in the non-traditional courtship between nearly on the shelf Sarah, and her reclusive duke for a neighbour Matthew. The determination and genuine personalities of both characters carries this book off effortlessly and would leave me wanting for more if the story had not been finished up so neatly! I adore a good romance novella and liken it to the perfect bite ...
